Designing (structures, functionality, usability, user interfaces and content) for mobile/handheld Augmented Reality gets more and more important beside technical questions. My Master Thesis on “Conveing Information for Cultural Heritage with Mobile Augmented Reality” covers these topics as well, by trying to shape AR’s nature and the way, AR suits to convey meaningful information through it’s inherent added values: Slides of my presentation (PDF).

AR offers new ways to perceive information, once we now or clearify, how to employ it. This goes especially for information visualization/depiction and by creating a context between reality and virtual objects. AR is a strong tool, when adding information by extending/tagging reality, showing hidden or invisible information, or by restoring/depicting e.g. how something looked like before that is either not available or accessible anymore, or destroyed and completely gone.  Extending reality, e.g. with superimposed annotations or visually aiding elements, emphasizing parts in it mainly visually, enriching it with additional or restored information, and guiding users through it.

The thesis presentation covers these elements as a theoretical background. Note, that Michael also adresses Design Challenges for AR.

Update: The idea to shape guidelines for AR was also a recent topic at the ISMAR confere 2011.
